Founded in December 1989 by Jo Kukathas, Andrew Leci, Jit Murad and Zahim Albakri Instant Café is a constantly evolving ensemble of performers, writers and collaborators now led by Artistic Director Jo Kukathas.
From its early days performing a room Upstairs at Bon Ton restaurant it has sought to constantly redefine for itself what it means to make theatre. It was initially formed to create an alternative performer/writer driven collective and ended up being a brave, new and distinctive voice in contemporary Malaysian writing and theatre. The ensemble quickly garnered a loyal following with their black comedy, using dark humour to comment on everything from the absurdity of contemporary society to tyranny, stupidity and corruption.
